The LA Times has incredible multimedia coverage of the fires in Southern California. There is a lot of user generated content posted including photos, video, and audio. Check it out at the link below.

I can't even articulate how amazing this is...
This isn't an audio slideshow, but it's so incredible that it's worth looking at.
That is all I can really say. You're missing out if you don't take a look.

search for missing soldiers
hi guys. this is an interesting clip that i had mixed feelings about. it follows some american soldiers in baghdad who embark on a deadly search for their missing comrades. the photographer is totally in the moment and you can see it from the pictures which i liked a lot; it helped me to really envision what it would be like to be a soldier in baghdad. but, it runs almost seven minutes long and is narrated to death. also, the photographer was personally affected by these events and so it doesn't always seem like he's giving an objective account. check it out at http://www.nytimes.com/pages/multimedia/index.html by scrolling down and clicking "a search for missing soldiers"

Torre Calls Yankees Bonus Offer an ‘Insult'
This multimedia presentation is an interesting one because it comes with a variety of components. There is a written article, a slideshow, and 6:48 minutes of audio, all to help tell and enhance the story.
You can check it out at the New York Times website, posted on 10/19

Jain Festival
Jainism is one of the oldest religions in the world. One of my friends from home is a Jain, and I have one very good friend here who is also a Jain--but it's a very small religious group in India.
Jain Festival
When I saw this slideshow, I thought I'd share it with ya'll--not just because the images are really neat and culturally interesting, but also because I think the religion is just quite noble. These people (as you'll see from the photographs) will blow or sweep insects out of the way so as not to harm them. They will not eat meat, and they strive to protect living things--no matter how small.
It's a statement, I think, in a violent world.
Enjoy.

Toxic lake in China
This slideshow was the FRONT IMAGE on the NY Times website for quite some time today- an audio slideshow, front page! It supports a full story, but the slideshow itself only consists of music and pictures, no natural sound at all. I must admit, I would've liked to hear some opinions or ambient sludge noise, but the images were incredibly powerful. Really fine-art journalistic photography. I just thought it was so great that this medium was front-and-center on the NY times website!

"pesticides"
check out "pesticides" by Annie Wells at http://www.latimes.com/news/local/photography/
It's a little long but a really intimate and searing window into the sicknesses many who work on banana plantations in Nicaragua are struggling with. Lots of wide, medium and detail shots...really effective.

Intermixing of Classes
Hi guys! So I thought that this was interesting... It's a story about Todd Haynes' new film about Bob Dylan's life. There are photos from the film, mixed with archived photos, played along with audio of a New York Times interview with the director. I thought that the audio fit very well with the images... the only downside to the multimedia story was that I found myself reading the captions more than listening to Haynes.
As a side note, I'm currently taking a Comparative Directors course through Cinema Studies and one of our featured directors is Haynes - so I found this especially intriguing.
Have a look and I hope that you all enjoy it!
Best,
Calista

'Ridealong'
Check out 'Ridealong' under the link below. This is a great example of a slideshow with audio. It follows the story of Brian Baker, "the country's foremost authority on mid-'60s Honda sports cars...". The pictures do a great job of setting up the visual information for the piece.

'Becoming Bob'
My weekly pick: A NY Times multimedia slideshow... Todd Haynes, the Director of 'I'm Not There,' the new film about Bob Dylan talks about how he constructed the film. This subject is not something that I would immediately think would work as a multimedia project, but actually, it is perfect..check it out........http://www.nytimes.com/pages/multimedia/index.html?8qa

Slide Show- My Pick
My pick for an audio slide show to share this week also comes from the LA Times, I've posted the link below.
It tells the story of one Thomas Hamill, an American civilian who was taken hostage while working in Iraq in 2004. He escaped but several of his co-workers were killed. He narrates the story; it's a really provoking presentation.

Photo essay about teens in NY
http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2007/09/15/nyregion/thecity/20070916_SEVENTEEN_GRAPHIC.html
This is a really, really great photo essay with audio interviewing 17 year olds in NYC. They're all relatively short, but really well done, and I thought it was interesting that the photos are free-timed, and that you can flip through them at your own pace (not to the music)

The Obama Experience
I must say, though I was at least 50 feet back, the crowd around me was just as excited as the crowd in front. I had to bring my telephoto out, and my ISO was pretty high, so the images are either grainy or a little soft, but I managed to get a few shots. My flickr is down right now, but soon I'll post some! I was to his left side, so the flat lighting they had from the front for TV worked out well (it made some really nice contrasty shadows on his face, and cast a really neat glow around the people.)

LA Times Multimedia Presentation
This multimedia presentation can be found on the LA Times website (http://www.latimes.com/news/local/oceans/la-oceans-series,0,7842752.special). I thought that it was interesting, not only in way of subject matter, but it's a presentation that comes in a five part series. In addition, you can explore the story in any way you choose, whether it be graphics, photographs, or video clips. With interesting facts that fade in and out on the screen, along with message boards, and additional resource links, the LA Times is really experimenting with the multiple aspects and possibilities of multimedia presentations.
Audio Slide Show
Dashed Dreams
This is an audio slideshow from the Roanoke Times in Virginia. The newspaper has an ongoing series called "Land of Opportunity" about the problems of the indigent population of Mexico---whether they've immigrated to the United States already or dream of doing so in the future.
This particular slideshow is a little long, but the photos are really beautiful and poignant.
Weekly Slideshow & New Website
My link for the week can be found at http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/arts/ and then click on "every picture tells a story in 'ravine'. It's a great photo slideshow about an artist who is painting a car in order to remind people about the history of chavez ravine. I like it because it is very visual and the pictures depict detail shots of the artwork as well as the artist at work from interesting vantage points, like overhead. The interview that accompanies it is good too, but I would have liked to hear more background noises, like the car starting up or something.
Also, I made a website this weekend with the same service that Rebecca uses. Check it out if you like at http://impactfolios.com/akemihiatt/
If you guys are interested, the first month is a free trial but after that I think it gets pretty pricey. Do you happen to know of any cheaper alternatives?
